Using your insurance for therapy
Many extended health plans help cover psychotherapy and counselling. Every plan is different, so the details below can help you check what yours includes — and we're always glad to answer questions along the way.
How reimbursement usually works
You pay for your session
Payment is made at the time of each session, so there's nothing to sort out before we begin.
We give you a detailed receipt
After each session you receive a receipt with the practitioner details and information most insurers ask for when you claim.
You submit to your insurer
Send the receipt to your extended health provider, and they reimburse you according to the terms of your plan.
What to confirm with your insurer
Before your first appointment, a quick call to your provider is the surest way to understand your coverage. Helpful things to ask:
- Whether your plan covers psychotherapy or counselling, and any annual maximum.
- Which provider designations your plan reimburses — for example, services provided by a Registered Nurse, Registered Psychotherapist, Social Worker or Psychologist.
- Whether a physician's referral is required before you start.
- How to submit receipts, and any per-session or yearly limits.
Common questions
Do you bill my insurance directly?
We don't bill insurers directly. You pay for your session and we provide a receipt to submit to your provider for reimbursement, based on your plan.
Will my plan definitely cover it?
We can't guarantee coverage, because every plan is different. The surest way to know is to ask your insurer the questions above before your first appointment.
What information is on the receipt?
Your receipt includes the date, the service provided, the amount paid, and the practitioner's professional details — the information insurers typically require.
